REVIEW: Life of Pi

There are no spoilers in this review.

PLOT: A young man who survives a disaster at sea is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. While cast away, he forms an unexpected connection with another survivor... a fearsome Bengal tiger.

THE GOOD: Spiritual message. I've never read the novel for Life of Pi, but from what I've heard, the main message is consistent. I can't really dive too deep into this part of my review because doing so would reveal spoilers. I will say that I think this is a beautiful time for this movie to come around. I've listened to a few podcasts review this movie and each discussion was more intriguing than the previous. I've heard supreme atheists question their beliefs and the existence of God. It's a pretty powerful film that is told is such a capturing way.

They should have gotten Andy Serkis to play the tiger.

Visuals. Life of Pi is the most gorgeous film I have seen this year. The visuals are incredible. Claudio Miranda is a great cinematographer who captures this story in such compelling ways. For a movie that mostly takes place on a boat, his shots always seem fresh and I never got bored. There are many moments that took my breath away. The ship sinking, the jellyfish at night, and of course the flying fish. Speaking of the fish, there are moments of aspect ration changes in this film to enhance the 3D. Fish jump in and out of the frames over the black letterbox bars, which adds a brilliant effect.

Ang Lee. He's back, in my opinion. Yes, he did go away and ventured into some films that just didn't have the impact we were used to. I'm talking Hulk, Lust, Caution, and Taking Woodstock. Storytelling with high quality visuals is when Lee really shines. Life of Pi has become my second favorite movie by him, as nothing will beat Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon for me.

We Bought a Zoo? More like We Boat a Zoo. HHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAR!

THE BAD: CGI. When you have a boy in a lifeboat with a bunch of wild animals, CGI is going to need to be used. It's understandable, and I'm glad the producers waited until now to make this movie. It's still a hair off though. Some unnatural looking moments here and there could take you out of the film.

THE END: Life of Pi is a must-see movie, and if it weren't for the amazing special effects, I would tell you not to rush to the theatre to see this one. But you must. You have to see this movie in 3D before it leaves cinemas as it is truly a spectacle to behold. Check this one out now!

DISCUSS: What did you think of Life of Pi? What did you think of the ending? What did you think of the acting? What was your favorite part? Have you read the book?

Life of CGI is a must-see film.
