What We're Watching 2012, Part 2

Now that we have a baby again, we've been staying in and watching lots of TV. Let's go over a bunch of the shows that we're currently watching.

Homeland - After Homeland won the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series, beating some of my other favorite shows like Mad Men, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, and Downton Abbey, I just had to watch it. I found the beginning and end of the first season to be a bit boring, but the middle of the series was great. I would describe Homeland as being just like 24, except no importance on time and a lot less action. The acting is great and the story is very hooking. Season 2 has started out incredibly good, except the last couple episodes have been a little weak. I'm happy that they are moving the story along a little faster though. There are a few things that happened already that I wasn't expecting until the end of the season.

-----------------------------

The Walking Dead - The Walking Dead does something that no other show has done before it. It adds addicting character drama to a zombie horror story. The two elements together work really well. The first season was pretty good, and the second season was better, though suffers from too much dialogue at times. The third season has been full of shocks already and I'm excited to see where it goes. You don't have to be a horror fan to like this show. I don't really care for horror films, yet this gets me.

-----------------------------

Downton Abbey - We just finished watching the new third season and this is still such a great show. The production value is so high. I'll admit that the drama in this season hasn't been quite as capturing as previously, but there's enough to work with. This season also has one of my favorite Maggie Smith lines of all time; I have never laughed so hard at this show before. If you've enjoyed previous seasons of Downton, you'll love this one, too. Really looking forward to the next Christmas Special!

-----------------------------

The Neighbors - Modern Family has gotten pretty standard for me now. It still makes me laugh, but I kind of expect what's going to happen. That does not occur with ABC's The Neighbors. It's kind of a Mork and Mindy mixed with 3rd Rock from the Sun, but funnier, in my opinion. Simon Templeman is flippin' hilarious. I really hope more people watch this show as I think it's more clever than it lets on.

-----------------------------

Sailor Moon - I decided that Julie was at the right age to introduce her to Sailor Moon. I own all of the episodes on DVD, including the three movies, so we've been cranking through them. She loves it. Much more than I thought she would. I'm such a proud anime daddy. I used to love this show as a kid. They are currently making a new Sailor Moon season in Japan that should be airing around summer of next year. We are super looking forward to that, and hope to finish watching all 200 episodes by then. At this point, we are nearing the end of season 1, which I forgot is so long!

-----------------------------

Doctor Who - Well, Bethany and I have finally taken the plunge and started watching Doctor Who. I've always wanted to watch it, but never knew a proper place to start. People told me that starting with the 2005 series that's available on Netflix Watch Instantly is a great starting point. So, we did, and now we're hooked. Bethany watches much more than I do since she spends a lot of time feeding Coral, so she's ahead of me and might even be a bigger fan. Right now, I just started watching the second season, a.k.a. the first season with David Tennant.

-----------------------------

Breaking Amish - This can probably be considered our guilty pleasure of the season. Breaking Amish is a "reality show" about four Amish and one Mennonite young adults who leave their communities to join the secular world. A lot of stuff is dramatized for the show and lots of things have come up that were apparently hidden by the producers, but I enjoyed the show whenever the kids were surprised by something like an escalator or smartphone. It's as close to a real-life Encino Man that we're going to get. Not the best show, but it's semi-entertaining enough.

As always, you can see the latest on what shows and movies I'm watching by looking at my Miso. And feel free to tell me what TV shows you've been watching lately.
